Those who got selected, are given salary as per pay scale mentioned in the advertisement of that post. The salary of a post in Govt Job is calculated on Pay scale of that post. Pay Band 1: Pay Scale 5200-20200


Grade pay in PB-1 can be 1800, 1900, 2000, 2400, 2800 depending on post of the candidate.

Posts that are given Pay Band 1 salary include Group D, Clerk, LDC, Laboratory Attendant, Technician, Assistant, Radiographer, Lineman etc.



Pay Band 2: Pay Scale 9300-34800


Grade pay in PB-2 can be 4200, 4600, 4800, 5400 depending on post.

Posts that are given Pay Band 2 salary include Junior Engineer, UDC, TGT, PGT, PRT Teachers, Investigator etc.



Pay Band 3: Pay Scale 15600-39100


Grade pay in PB-3 can be 5400, 6600, 7600 depending on post.

Posts that are given Pay Band 3 salary include SDO / SDE, Assistant Professor, Director, IAS Officer etc.


Pay Band 4: Pay Scale 37400-67000


Grade pay in PB-4 can be 8700, 8900, 10000 depending on post.

Posts that are given Pay Band 3 salary include Professor, Accountant General /Principal Director etc.

These pay scales / pay bands are as per 7th CPC Pay Commission report for Central Govt Jobs. Also there are some other pay scales i.e. 9300-34800 plus Grade pay 3600, 4200, 4800 etc. depending on state. Also various posts can have pay scales in different pay bands.

There are also some pay scales as per requirement of a state in India. For example, Pay Scale of Group D employee in Haryana start with Rs. 16900 basic pay. Also please note that DC Rate contract staff employee is not given salary as per pay scales.

Total Salary = Basic pay or Entry Pay + Dearness Allowance (34%) + House Rent Allowance (HRA) + other allowances

In 5200-20200 Pay Scale, 5200 is the starting basic pay while 20200 is the last basic pay for a post. Similarly, In 9300-34800 Pay Scale, the starting basic pay is 9300 and last basic pay is 34800. When a new employee joins and given 9300-34800 pay scale, then in starting he/she is given salary based on 9300 basic pay. Various allowances are calculated on this basic pay and added to basic pay to come at total salary.
In 7th pay commission, grade pay is merged in Pay Scale. Earlier in 6th Pay Commission system, Grade pay was shown separately. It means Salary in 5200-20200 grade pay 2000 pay scale equals 7th pay scale of 21700-69100 with starting basic pay of Rs. 21700.

What does basic pay means: Basic pay is the entry pay on which various allowances are calculated. For example, Dearness allowance is currently 27% of basic pay, HRA is 24% of basic pay for Class X city, 16% of basic pay for Class Y city and 8% of basic pay for Class Z cities / rural areas. Similarly all allowances are calculated on this basic pay.

Basic Pay: This is the core of salary as many components (allowances) are calculated on this.
